Automatic Vacuum Soldering Systems

Rapid, accurate and repeatable soldering in a low oxygen environment is a crucial process step in the manufacture of many of today's optoelectronic packages.

West Technology Systems Limited have developed an Automatic Soldering Oven which enables reliable soldering of components in a cleanroom production environment.

The stainless steel vacuum chamber is evacuated to below 5x10-2mbar by a dry scroll pump. A number of back filling and re-evacuation cycles are then performed to ensure that the oxygen concentration within the chamber is low enough for heating to commence. Five individually controlled quartz lamps then heat the components to 145°C, +/- 2°C.

Each quartz lamp is controlled independently by a Eurotherm controller. A separate over temperature control monitors the total chamber temperature. Heating will not begin until backfilling is complete and the oxygen concentration is below a predetermined level (as measured by the oxygen monitor).

All tooling is supplied along with a number of interchangeable work holders. This enables an operator to load a batch of components into a work platen whilst another batch is already in process.

The system is PLC controlled with a MMI showing current status. The number of backfill cycles can be adjusted by an operator with password access.
